FOUNDER POPULATIONS OF THE INDIAN SUBCONTINENT

Bio Reviews Contents

This website describes research about the genetic history of the Indian subcontinent based on current DNA science. By using y-STR haplogroups and the phylogentic tree of mankind, the ancient geographical origins of various ethnic groups were estimated going back 10,000 to 35,000 years ago. The resulting publications are the books Before India: Exploring Your Ancestry with DNA and Ancestral Roots of the Jats: DNA Revelations. The books were followed by peer-reviewed original research articles that appeared in the journals Frontiers in Genetics and Molecular Genetics and Genomics.

Before India:
Exploring Your Ancestry with DNA
David G. Mahal

Before IndiaMirroring a multifaceted subject matter, the book Before India is a fascinating, well-researched amalgamation of genres—part genealogical guide, part ethnic history, part science expose—that draws a more holistic picture of ancestry by combining these varied insights. And while this easy-to-read text is a perfect launching point for people whose ancestry ties them to the Indian subcontinent, any reader will benefit from suggestions on how to trace your lineage to an ancestral group going back thousands of years.

The book includes a research study of the ancestral origins of several key ethnic communities in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, along with some communities of Indian and Pakistani origin in a few other countries.

Ancestral Roots of the Jats:
DNA Revelations
David G. Mahal

Ancestral Roots of the JatsThe Jats represent an ethnic community that has inhabited the northwest region of the Indian subcontinent (both in India and Pakistan) for several thousand years. This book is about the ancient origins of these people long before history books were written.

The Jat community is estimated to equal the combined population of France, Spain, and Portugal. Many members of this community are now scattered all over the world, including Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, United States, and New Zealand. This book is a shorter version of Before India, and focuses specifically on this ethnic community.
